Steps to checking your car’s oil level at home 

With your car parked and off for at least two hours, you can check your own oil level at home. Follow these quick steps to check your oil. You can also add oil at home, just make sure you get the right type for your vehicle. 

  1. Pop the hood of your vehicle. 
  2. Take out the dipstick. See the video above for a visual. 
  3. Clean off the dipstick with a paper towel or an old rag. 
  4. Insert it back into its slot. 
  5. Pull it out again. 
  6. Check the level on the bottom of the dipstick.

How are oil levels and oil life different? 

Oil level is the physical amount of oil in your engine. Oil life is how much longer your oil can last. When you put new oil in, it is at 100% of its life, but as it gets dirty, that percent will fall, letting you know that you need to change your oil.
